Choose a Rottnest Island ferry by mainland port

A Rottnest Island ferry can depart Perth, Fremantle or Hillarys, and the port changes both the mainland approach and the time on the water. Begin with where you will be staying and whether the return is on the same day. Then compare a crossing with admission against packages that add a bicycle or guided sightseeing. The island charge is a separate component even when collected within the ticket total.

This page covers the sea crossing and ferry packages. For airport terminals, train and bus connections, taxis and mainland parking, use the complete arrival guide. An airport transfer ends on the mainland; it needs to connect with the correct ferry terminal, check-in and boarding time rather than simply with the city named on a transfer reservation.

Compare transfers from Perth Airport (PER) to Fremantle on Kiwitaxi. The ferry is booked separately.

Perth departures and the Swan River

Perth departures use Barrack Street, with the journey taking up to about 90 minutes as a guide. This makes the approach itself a substantial part of the day. Reaching Perth Station from the airport is only one stage: the onward walk or transfer to the jetty still belongs in the plan. Choose Perth when a city-centre start and the river approach suit the day.

The Swan River scenic cruise is included in the Perth option of the ferry-and-commented-bus combination described on the tours page. It is not a feature of every ferry from every port. Operating changes can replace the river section with a bus, so leave room for a different approach rather than treating the scenery as a fixed transport condition.

Fremantle terminals and mainland time

Fremantle offers a sea crossing of about 25 minutes as a guide. Distinguish Victoria Quay and B Shed from North Fremantle at Rous Head; the shared place name does not make the terminals interchangeable. The Fremantle ferry-and-bike package on this page includes same-day return travel, island admission, bicycle use, helmet and bike lock. It is an independent island day rather than a guided bicycle ride.

B-Shed works affect the mainland approach. The O’Connor Landing kiss-and-ride area is closed, with an alternative drop-off area at E Shed planned and pedestrian and vessel access intended to continue. The package’s ticketing instructions direct visitors to the eastern side of E Shed. Allow the operator’s recommended 45 to 60 minutes before departure. For mainland time beyond the crossing, see Fremantle before or after your island visit.

Hillarys ferries and package differences

Hillarys Boat Harbour has a crossing guide of about 45 minutes. The same-day ferry offer includes the return crossing and island entry. Hotel pickup and drop-off apply only when the relevant option is selected and subject to availability. Food and drinks are separate. Choose this when island transport and activities will be arranged independently rather than added to the crossing.

The guided bus-and-historic-train package has a different scope: same-day return ferries, island admission, a three-and-a-half-hour guided island tour and a light picnic lunch are included. Selected Perth and Scarborough hotel transfers are available on request and must be pre-booked. The included tour time is the sightseeing component, rather than the total time from leaving accommodation to returning there.

Bicycle packages and getting around after arrival

A ferry-and-bike package makes sense when the ride is the main activity. Choose a route with time to collect and return the bicycle, take breaks and reach the return jetty. Helmets are compulsory. The island’s published cycle routes are planning suggestions, not personal completion guarantees. Use the beach guide to select a manageable destination and carry drinking water beyond the settlement.

The Island Explorer offers another way of getting around, but is a hop-on-hop-off bus without commentary or a guaranteed seat. It does not carry bicycles. If choosing between it and a guided bus package, decide whether flexible stops or organised explanations matter more. Switching between transport types during a short visit needs enough time for waiting and reaching the next meeting point.

Admission Fee: day return or overnight stay

Adult admission is AUD 21.50 for a same-day visit and AUD 28.50 for Extended Stay when the outward and return dates differ. These rates apply from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Extended Stay is charged once for the stay, not each day. When a fare or package says admission is included, use that total and do not add the island charge again.

Keep the return date consistent with your accommodation plan. An overnight stay opens up a different island schedule, but changes the admission basis and the return booking. Our accommodation guide compares areas rather than promising a particular room price or availability.

Wind, timetable changes and cancellations

Ferry travel is weather-dependent. Safety or weather conditions can lead to changes and cancellations; follow the booked service’s operating information. Timetables are published in dated blocks, including changes from 5 November 2026 and separate Christmas arrangements. Use the schedule for the actual travel date rather than assuming a year-round departure pattern or an evening return.

An evening activity deserves particular care: some island experiences finish after the last return ferry and are intended for overnight guests. Leave a realistic margin between an activity ending and ferry boarding. A short advertised crossing time does not shorten the time needed for ticket collection, equipment return or getting back from another part of the island.

Ferry booking questions

Should admission be added to the package price?

Only add a charge when it is separate. The three packages compared here include island admission.

Can I use the same admission rate when staying overnight?

The adult Extended Stay rate is AUD 28.50 for the 2026/27 tariff year and applies when arrival and departure are on different days.

Does a ferry ticket include the airport connection?

Plan the airport-to-terminal journey separately. The sea crossing begins at the mainland ferry port.
