How to get to Rottnest Island from your arrival terminal

Deciding how to get to Rottnest Island starts with choosing a mainland ferry departure: Fremantle, Perth at Barrack Street, or Hillarys Boat Harbour. Perth Airport (PER) connects to the mainland transport network, while the sea crossing is a separate part of the journey. Choose the port before arranging a taxi, train connection or hire car so that the airport journey ends at the terminal on your ferry ticket.

Fremantle crossings take about 25 minutes, Hillarys about 45 minutes and Perth up to about 90 minutes as indicative sailing times. Those figures exclude leaving the airport, collecting luggage, reaching the jetty and checking in. A shorter crossing does not necessarily make the whole airport connection shorter. Compare the departure port, sailing and return arrangements together on the ferry page.

For terminals T1 and T2, the Skybridge leads to Airport Central station. The Airport Line journey to Perth Station is published as 18 minutes of train travel. For T3 and T4, bus 292 connects with Redcliffe station, where the train journey to Perth Station is published as 15 minutes. Keep the bus journey and waiting time separate from that train figure when choosing a sailing.

Train and bus connections to the coast

For Fremantle, use the airport and Fremantle rail network with the connection shown by the journey planner. Fremantle station is about five minutes on foot from Victoria Quay according to the ferry terminal information. Allow additional time to find the ticket office and boarding point. North Fremantle at Rous Head is a different departure location, so a ticket marked Fremantle still deserves a look at its precise terminal.

A Perth departure uses Barrack Street Jetty, with a separate onward walk or connection after the Airport Line journey into the city. Hillarys Boat Harbour is served by bus 423 with connections towards Warwick or Stirling. Select the public transport route for the actual departure date, including the final stop and walk. A city transport ticket covers the relevant local services within its validity; the Rottnest sea ferry has its own ticket.

Taxi and transfer from Perth Airport (PER)

A taxi or prearranged transfer suits travellers who want to take their luggage directly towards the ferry terminal rather than change between public transport services. Allow for flight arrival procedures, baggage collection, road traffic and ferry check-in as distinct stages. Give the driver the terminal on the booking confirmation and the intended departure time, rather than only the name of the island.

The airport transfer destination is Fremantle as a town. Agree the specific Rottnest ferry terminal separately, including a possible E-Shed drop-off during the B-Shed works. B Shed is not a preselected terminal in the transfer destination, and Fremantle Passenger Terminal should not be substituted for it. Choose the vehicle for the travelling party and luggage, then leave a margin between the road arrival and boarding.

Fremantle and the B-Shed works

As of 3 November 2026, the O’Connor Landing kiss-and-ride area is closed during the B-Shed project, with an alternative drop-off area planned at E Shed. Pedestrian and vessel access is intended to remain available. The ferry operator recommends arriving 45 to 60 minutes ahead. Follow the current terminal instructions even when a saved map points to the usual entrance.

The ferry-and-bike package uses a temporary ticket office on the eastern side of E Shed; boarding closes ten minutes before departure. Its same-day return ferry, admission and bicycle equipment begin the island outing from Fremantle, rather than from the airport. For a mainland stay before or after the crossing, see Fremantle before or after your island visit.

Car hire and parking

Keep a hire car on the mainland: Rottnest Island is predominantly car-free. A car can serve a wider mainland itinerary and the drive to the port, followed by parking during the island stay. Western Australia drives on the left. Hillarys offers free parking according to its ferry operator; Victoria Quay has limited paid short-, medium- and long-stay spaces. Choose a parking arrangement that covers the return date and allow time to reach the jetty with luggage.

Arrival on the island and access needs

Plan the final journey to your island accommodation separately from the sea crossing. The accommodation shuttle links Thomson Bay, Geordie Bay and Kingstown. Changing Places on Henderson Avenue has been closed since 20 July 2026, with reopening announced by mid-December 2026 as of the November information. Travellers needing that facility should arrange alternatives before departure. For weather-related ferry changes and seasonal planning, read when to visit.
