Rottnest Island snorkeling with a guide
Rottnest Island snorkeling can be a dedicated boat activity, part of a sailing trip, or an independent visit to a marked underwater trail. Start by deciding how much guidance is wanted in the water. The dedicated guided boat experience includes an in-water snorkel guide and two sessions of 45 minutes. Masks, snorkels, fins and wetsuits are supplied, alongside briefings on safety and equipment. It starts at the island Fuel Jetty, so arrange travel to Rottnest separately.
Floating aids are available if required on that guided experience, and drinks and light refreshments are included. A full-face mask is an optional extra. Compare this focused format with the catamaran, where snorkelling is one element of a sailing outing. Both start on the island, but the catamaran guided snorkel opportunity requires good swimming ability without assistance. Choose the experience around actual confidence in the water, including the ability to return to a boat.

Snorkel and dive options from the mainland
The snorkelling and diving day trip starts at Fishing Boat Harbour in Fremantle, at 6 Molfetta Quays. Its inclusions specify two boat dives with one air cylinder supplied, SCUBA equipment, snorkelling equipment, buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and the Rottnest Island marine waters levy. A dive guide and island landing fee are excluded. Read the chosen snorkel or dive option carefully; the marine levy and the landing fee are different charges.
This mainland-start format is a different choice from joining an in-water guided snorkelling trip at the island Fuel Jetty. Transport arrangements and the kind of supervision belong in the comparison alongside equipment and meals. The presence of dive equipment should not be read as a promise of a dive guide. Visitors planning a separate ferry crossing can use the ferry guide to keep that journey distinct from the water activity.
Sailing, equipment and water activities
The catamaran trip from Thomson Bay includes snorkelling equipment, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, seasonal fruit, coffee and tea. A guided snorkel is an opportunity for good swimmers, rather than an unconditional activity for every passenger. This makes the outing a choice for a mix of sailing and water activities. The boat tour comparison explains how it differs from a cruise built around a meal or a charter starting at Hillarys.
For an independent outing, arrange equipment before heading to a bay without facilities. The island hire list valid from 1 July 2026 gives an adult snorkel set at AUD 23, with an AUD 25 deposit. Think about how the equipment will travel with drinking water and other belongings. Outside the settlement, drinking-water supplies are limited, so carry what is needed for the route. A longer trail also needs enough time for the return journey.
Self-guided trails at Little Salmon Bay and Parker Point
Little Salmon Bay has an approximately 700-metre loop with ten buoys marking underwater information panels. Allow about an hour for the trail. The bay is more than five kilometres from the settlement, with a published cycling estimate of about 25 minutes, or access from Island Explorer stop 6. There are no dedicated beach facilities there; toilets at Parker Point are about five minutes away on foot. These details make preparation part of the independent visit.
Parker Point has an approximately 800-metre trail with twelve information panels, also with about an hour suggested. Island Explorer stop 5 serves the area, and the island guidance gives about 17 minutes by bicycle from Thomson Bay. Toilets with accessible facilities and a beach ramp are listed. For the comparison of coast access and facilities, see the beaches guide. Trail lengths are planning information, not a requirement to complete a full circuit in unsuitable conditions.
Sanctuary rules, wind and entering the water
Little Salmon Bay and Parker Point are sanctuary areas. Fishing and removing plants or animals are prohibited, and reefs must not be walked on. Look at the information panels without touching the reef beneath them. Wildlife remains wild, so sightings are not guaranteed on a guided or independent visit. Leave space for animals and take rubbish away rather than leaving food or packaging at a beach stop.
The sheltered coast can help when choosing where to go: northerly winds favour considering the south coast, and southerly winds the north. This is an orientation, not a safety assurance. Check the actual conditions, tides and local signs before entering. Swimming is prohibited between the main ferry jetty and Fuel Jetty, from the T-Jetty and from the end of the main ferry jetty. Use the weather guide for seasonal context while keeping the decision to enter the water specific to the day.
