Rottnest Island Tours: Day Trips, Bikes and Bus

Choose Rottnest Island tours by where the day begins: mainland ferry packages, island Segway rides or Fuel Jetty snorkelling and cruise departures.

  • Ferries and island tours compared
  • Quokka and marine reserve rules explained
  • Island arrival and meeting points distinguished

Choosing Rottnest Island tours by starting point

Rottnest Island tours range from ferry-and-bike packages to guided snorkelling and a commented island bus ride. Begin with the departure point: a mainland package brings you across the water, while a Segway tour or a boat meeting at the Fuel Jetty starts after you have reached the island. Comparing those starting models is more useful than comparing headline durations alone.

For a self-directed day, choose ferry travel with bicycle hire. For an introduction with spoken explanations, choose the ferry-and-bus combination. If a water activity is the main reason for travelling, build the crossing around its island meeting time and leave room for the return. Our ferry guide separates crossing times, admission and mainland terminals.

Island tours

Ferry packages suit a day trip from the mainland, while the Segway and snorkeling tours start on the island. The cruise pairs a boat outing with a menu.

Day trips from Perth, Fremantle and Hillarys

The ferry-and-bus package offers Perth or Fremantle departures according to the option. Return ferry tickets, island admission and a 90-minute bus tour with commentary are included. Choose Perth when the river approach is part of the attraction; choose Fremantle when the shorter sea crossing fits the day better. Published crossing guides are up to about 90 minutes from Perth and about 25 minutes from Fremantle, rather than assured arrival times.

Hillarys is a different port, with a crossing guide of about 45 minutes. Its bike-and-ferry package includes same-day return ferry travel, all-day bicycle hire, helmet, lock and island admission. A courtesy transfer is available on request from selected Perth and Scarborough hotels. That is a selected-hotel service, so an airport arrival needs its own mainland plan. Use the getting-there guide for that part of the journey.

Ferry plus bicycle: an independent coastal day

The Fremantle bike package combines round-trip ferries from B Shed with bicycle hire, a helmet and island admission. Pick it when the main activity is choosing your own stops between the settlement and the coast. The Hillarys and Fremantle packages share that independent format, but begin at different mainland ports. Neither should be treated as a guided cycling itinerary or as a promise to reach every bay.

Choose a route that leaves room for photographs, drinking water and the bicycle return. Helmets are compulsory. Outside the settlement drinking-water supplies are limited, so carry what is needed before setting off. The beach guide compares facilities and access, helping narrow the route rather than turning a day out into a list of distant stops.

Commented bus tour versus Island Explorer

A commented bus tour is an organised sightseeing component with explanations along the way. The Island Explorer is hop-on-hop-off transport without commentary. It serves 19 stops, including Parker Point, Little Salmon Bay, the lighthouse and West End, with no guaranteed seat. Bicycles and bicycle trailers cannot travel on it. These differences matter if the plan depends on leaving a bicycle behind or joining a particular return bus.

Choose the commented package when transport and an introduction to the island should be arranged together. Choose the Explorer for independently selected stops, with time allowed for waiting and the onward journey. For the military heritage, continue with Oliver Hill and Wadjemup Lighthouse, where the fort and tower visits are explained separately.

Swan River as part of the Perth option

The scenic Swan River cruise belongs to the Perth departure of the ferry-and-bus package. It is part of reaching Rottnest, rather than a separate river excursion added to every port option. Weather and operating conditions can alter the journey, including replacement of the river section by bus. Decide whether the river approach is central to the day or whether starting closer to the open-water crossing is more practical.

Segway, snorkelling and a meal afloat

The one-hour settlement Segway activity starts on the island at Henderson Avenue. Rider training and assessment, a guide, personal radio communication and safety equipment are included. This makes it a compact guided activity to fit into an island stay; arrange the crossing separately rather than treating the meeting point as a mainland departure.

The three-hour guided snorkelling boat activity starts at the Fuel Jetty. It includes two 45-minute in-water sessions, an in-water guide, mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuit hire, safety briefings and light refreshments. The four-hour cruise also starts at the Fuel Jetty and combines a meal, drinks, lobster-fishing participation and optional swimming or snorkelling. Catch conditions determine the lobster result. Compare the dedicated snorkelling options and boat trips according to how much time should be spent in the water.

Scenic flights and tandem skydives

A scenic overflight and a visit with time ashore serve different plans. The 45-minute flight from Jandakot passes over Perth and Rottnest; the return-flight visit described in the quokka guide includes an island stay and an opportunity to see quokkas. A tandem skydive starts at the island airport, with 10,000 ft or 15,000 ft as options within one activity and island travel additional. Weather affects these plans, so allow flexibility rather than building a tight onward connection around them.

For private accommodation pickup, an island rickshaw or a charter option, see the separate private tours comparison.

Tour planning questions

Is the Island Explorer a commented sightseeing tour?

It is hop-on-hop-off transport without commentary. The ferry-and-bus package includes a separate 90-minute commented tour.

Do the Fuel Jetty activities include a mainland ferry?

Arrange the crossing separately for the guided snorkelling activity and the four-hour cruise. Their meeting point is on Rottnest Island.

Are the two skydive heights separate tours?

They are selectable heights within the same tandem activity. Travel to the island is separate, and weather suitability matters.
