Choosing Rottnest Island accommodation by location

Choose Rottnest Island accommodation around the way the stay will work: arrival with luggage, daily journeys to the coast and the return ferry. Thomson Bay, the northern bays and Kingstown give different bases, while the designated campground offers an alternative to a building. The accommodation range includes self-contained houses, historic cottages, bungalows and cabins. Compare the actual category and location rather than expecting every island stay to have the same facilities.

Thomson Bay is the main settlement base. It suits a plan that repeatedly returns to the settlement between outings, particularly when organising onward transport and supplies. For a stay around the northern bays, look at the accommodation location alongside the trips planned from it. Geordie Bay is part of the accommodation shuttle network, so include that link when comparing an address with a central base.

Kingstown is another accommodation area on the shuttle network. Treat the journey there as part of arrival planning, especially with luggage or a booked evening activity. The accommodation shuttle links Thomson Bay, Geordie Bay and Kingstown and is also available to other visitors. It is a different service from the Island Explorer. Choosing an address and choosing a sightseeing bus ticket are therefore separate decisions.

Camping near the main settlement

The designated campground is near the main settlement and Pinky Beach. It has 43 unpowered sand sites, with a maximum of six people and two tents per site. Choose it for a camping stay with your own sleeping equipment, rather than treating an unoccupied beach as an alternative pitch. Camping belongs in designated areas, and lighting fires is prohibited.

Keep the site capacity, equipment and island transport in the same plan. A party travelling with camping gear has a different luggage task from someone carrying an overnight bag. Arrange the ferry and arrival connection around what will actually be carried, and leave time to reach the pitch before any booked outing. The arrival guide explains the mainland connections and terminal works.

Booking windows, check-in and island admission

As of 3 November 2026, the current self-contained accommodation information describes a nine-month booking window, with releases on the first Wednesday of each month. Use the release calendar for the intended category and dates. The window identifies when reservations open; it does not promise that a particular building, location or length of stay will remain available.

For the self-contained category described in that information, check-in starts at 14:00 and keys are collected through the Visitor Centre. Apply the arrival instructions for the accommodation actually reserved. When a ferry arrives before room access, keep the first part of the day manageable with the luggage arrangements in mind, rather than scheduling a distant coastal outing around an assumed early check-in.

The adult extended-stay admission fee is AUD 28.50 for the stay under the tariff valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. It is charged once for the stay, rather than each day. Where a ferry total already includes extended-stay admission, avoid adding it again to the budget. Select an overnight return arrangement on the ferry booking, matching the departure date to the accommodation.

What staying overnight makes possible

An overnight base makes an evening on the island possible without fitting it around a same-day ferry. The twilight sail departs from Thomsons Bay on Rottnest, rather than Fremantle. It includes a shared antipasto platter and a complimentary glass of bubbles. Arrange accommodation separately: the sail is an evening activity and ends after the last return ferry off the island.

For a broader comparison of evening options, read about sunset on Rottnest. Keep the route back to the accommodation in the plan as well as the activity itself. A northern-bay or Kingstown address needs a different return arrangement from a settlement base. The same location decision also shapes morning trips to the beaches and bays.

Supplies, everyday facilities and respectful stays

Bring necessary prescription medicines because the island has no pharmacy. Drinking-water availability is limited outside the settlement, so carry water for outings rather than relying on a refill at every bay. The Visitor Centre has an ATM during its opening hours; laundry machines accept coins or cards depending on location. Keep payment options suited to the facilities you intend to use.

A bicycle can serve coastal outings, with a helmet required. The Island Explorer is a hop-on-hop-off service without commentary or a guaranteed seat and does not carry bicycles. Choose one practical way to return to the accommodation rather than planning to load a bike onto that bus. For longer outdoor days, compare seasonal weather and wind before deciding how much to include.

Respect quiet surroundings, particularly after 23:00, and do not drink alcohol on public roads. Historical buildings also require care in how they are understood: the Quod ceased being tourist accommodation in 2018. The island's Aboriginal history and places of remembrance deserve time and respect alongside the practical arrangements of a stay.
